In the United States, there are more than 38 million binge drinkers, almost 25 million illegal drug users, and over 6 million people abusing prescription medications. In fact, it is estimated that 1 out of 10 workers has a substance abuse problem. This health and safety training course is geared towards managers and supervisors, and explains the laws specific to substance abuse in the workplace.
This course illustrates how people with substance abuse problems bring serious issues to the workplace. These include decreased productivity, a hostile work environment, damage to the company’s reputation, and unsafe working conditions. Under OSHA’s General Duty Clause employers have a responsibility to maintain a work environment free from recognized hazards that are likely to cause serious injury or fatalities. Managers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring workers do not pose a danger to themselves or others. The Department of Transportation has Procedures for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs (Rule 49 CFR Part 40). Under this regulation, employees such as truck drivers and mechanics are required to be given random drug and alcohol tests.
Viewers also learn how to recognize substance abuse, how to educate and use testing when handling substance abuse issues, how to create a drug and alcohol-free workplace, and other related matters. Watch this training course to learn your role as a manager or supervisor in creating a safe and health workplace.
