It is estimated that 1 in 10 workers has a substance abuse problem. This can cause issues in the workplace, such as decreased productivity, a hostile work environment, and damage to the company’s reputation. This health and safety training video teaches managers and supervisors which substances are most commonly abused, how to recognize substance abuse, and other matters relating to substance abuse in the construction industry.
This course explains the commonly abused substances and the effects of them. Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in the workplace. Another drug that’s often abused in the workplace is marijuana, which is usually smoked in either pipes or rolled joints. Some prescription drugs are chemically-similar to heroin and other narcotics, making them addictive and more frequently abused. Another way that substance abusers might try to get high while on the job is by inhaling fumes from solvents, adhesives, gasoline and other chemicals.
Viewers learn how unusual behavior could be a sign of substance abuse, and are shown the effects of different substances. This course explains tangible ways to find out if substance abuse is the cause of a worker’s unusual behavior. One way is to focus on the worker’s job performance, since it’s difficult to work efficiently when under the influence. Another way is to keep written performance reports and safety records. Viewers also learn about substance abuse education and testing, as well as how to handle abuse situations.
Watch this health and safety training video to learn practical ways to handle substance abuse in the workplace.
