Overview

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms found in human blood or other bodily fluids that cause diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. This safety training program explains how construction workers can protect themselves from hazardous exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Viewers learn how they can be infected by a bloodborne pathogen, such as through ingestion, absorption, and injection. This program emphasizes the importance of universal precautions, which include the following: avoid contact with a bleeding coworker; wash hands thoroughly before eating or drinking; avoid eating, drinking, or applying makeup in areas that have potentially infectious material; do not store food or drinks in areas that have potentially infectious material; avoid direct contact with potentially infected objects such as used needles, broken glass, and contaminated tools.

This program also teaches workers how to properly dispose of contaminated items such as gloves and bandages by placing them in approved biohazard containers. Potentially contaminated sharp objects such as needles, and broken glass should be disposed of in an approved biohazard sharps container.

Watch this safety training program to learn how to protect yourself and coworkers from exposure to bloodborne pathogens on the job site.
