Overview

Maneuvering large vehicles backwards can be difficult, even as a licensed CMV driver. Operating trucks safely in reverse takes extra preparation, skill, and concentration. If you are not paying close attention while docking or parking, you run the risk of causing an accident or incident. This training module ensures truck drivers are well-prepared to reverse their vehicles safely, reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall driving performance.

The basics of backing, specific to straight-line backing and offset backing, are covered first to help set the foundation for safe reverse driving. Some of these basics include performing a walk-around inspection and moving slow with caution. Trainees are shown the specific safe practices for three different types of parking: straight line, offset, and parallel.

Driving a CMV in reverse is a task that requires careful attention due to the size, weight, and limited visibility of the vehicle. Use this training module to learn the key driving practices for backing and parking trucks.
